The Student School Bus Safety Partnership

Dori Saves Lives organized the Student School Bus Safety Partnership to improve school transportation. Partnering together with schools, communities, and bus drivers we strive to increase bus transportation safety awareness.

School Bus Transportation Facts

• 1,172 fatal crashes between 2006 and 2015 were school-transportation-related.

• That's an average of 131 deaths per year.

• Occupants of school transportation vehicles accounted for 9 percent of the fatalities.

• Seat belts have been required on passenger cars since 1968, but not school buses.

Design and Vulnerability

School bus safety is a top priority. For many children, without public school buses, they would not be able to get the education that they so desperately need. We must work together to reduce school-transportation-related fatal crashes and improve the safety of our children while riding on public school buses.

School buses are well designed to handle impact. Their large sizes, compartmentalized design, and cushioned seats help to absorb impacts from crashes. This, however, does not help those children who are waiting for the bus to arrive or have just gotten off. The most vulnerable students are those who are on foot, coming to or from a bus.
